Mushroom Powerup!

Man...i've just read a review, Pikmin 2 on the Gamecube and you know what? If i have a GC, that will be THE game i'll be playing. I've only seen screenshots, but when i read that this guy could play it for hours on end, i wanna have a go at it as well! Really, how could a bright, colorful cartoonish kind of game with cute lil characters be anything more than just kiddies games right? I guess you simply cannot judge a game by its game cover hmm? heheh!

The first Pikmin, being one of the first launch titles created for the GC console when it debuted, turned out so good because of its addictive gameplay. The game involves moving around these color-coded Pikmin creatures in large groups and there's strategies to apply. I liked the game because u get to control these cute Pikmins and it's just so innovative looking. I guess it's pretty fun to play as well. Gotta get me a GC!

Talking about innovative, Pikmin is actually the brainchild of the famous Japs game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto. Don't know him? C'mon, he's famous for Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros and Zelda to name a few! Tho, i'm more familiar with Miyamoto-san's Super Mario Bros; it's a great side scrolling game at the time because it was so different from other games in terms of how it played and looked. C'mon, we all played Super Mario games sometimes back and it thrilled us remember? Recently i've played Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, a Gameboy Advance game and boy how far they've come! Mario never looked better, even talked and sporting a funny italian accent. Pairing up with Luigi and helping out each other, the game actually gave meaning to the word bros!

I really look up to Shigeru Miyamoto's work designing games. He's one of my fave idol in the gaming industry aside from Jordan Mechner (Prince of Persia). If there is one game i'd like to learn to make, it'd be the Super Mario games. They're simply fun and addictive to play. And his latest creation Pikmin 2 showcases yet another one of his bright ideas.

DOOM 3 review

I can't believe doom3 beat halflife2 in getting to us. We all know this 2 heavyweights will go head2head in determining the king of FPS. Whether or not they dish it out among themselves, i think these 2 games are pretty much in their own class and will garner their own fans. And while halflife2 will be coming up shortly (late sept/early oct), Doom3 here should keep us entertained for a bit.

Before i got to playing doom3, i whipped up an earlier version of id's famous fps, doom2 and compared to the new doom, i was like...duude! The gap is extremely unreal! i liked what i played in doom2; it's simple, straightforward and a classic. Doom3 simply builds on that experience and brings the doom franchise to date. One thing's for certain...the spirit of the doom series is as strong as ever in this new take of the FPS that started it all.

Thanks to the new graphics engine devised by the game engine programmer John Carmack, people at id have really outdone themselves this time. This graphical upgrade is essential to provide the mood set by the game and it itself are part of the game mechanics. Every object, tiles, walls and machines are rendered realistically and the whole environment only serves to immerse yourself more. No other game to date has tried this much just to transport the player into the gameworld. Then there's real time dynamic shadows. Almost every little thing in the game casts shadows! You gotta see it for yourself. Shadows play a heavy role in doom3 but its main purpose is to supposedly scare you shitless. You'll eventually freak out by any moving shadows later on in the game. Shadows is one thing, total darkness is another. This game is totally dark. It's amazing how one place is totally pitchblack but when you light it up, you can see all the details. This whole dark thing will play against you as the monsters often surprises you from the dark. Monsters? Did anybody say monsters? ...help!

Zombies in the beginning of the game are just groovy. They moved like one, kills like one, and drops dead like one. Coupled with physics, they go down realistically and often amusing at times. Fireballs hurling Imps...ahh, this guy will show up consistently thruout the whole game. You'll come to love them simply bcoz of their predictable attack patterns. Well, next there's this bull thing, rocket launcher dude, flying fireheads and nasty stinging babies. The bosses are so cool and scary at the same time, i don't know how to describe it. But i gotta say, i hate it when monsters pop up from behind walls or something in the tradition of old dooms. They make me friggin' jump at most times!

Weapons! I thought i loved the sound of my pistol reloading, wait till you hear the shotgun! I pretty much use the shotgun thruout bcoz it's damn powerful upclose. Machinegun's fine and sounds powerful but doesn't pack damagewise. The chaingun's the mean machine with the terrific dum-dum-dum sound. Plasma rifle, like previous dooms shoots blue colored enerby balls. It sounds uber cool to boot! You have your rocket launchers, a BFG that shoots a giant green ball which consumes anything in its path and don't forget your chainsaw darling. Yup, chainsaws! There's this incredible weapon you get middle half of the game...the Soulcube! You have to at least kill 5 monsters before you can use it. Once unleashed, it will kill any nearby monsters and transfer it's life to you. Often up to full. A life saver towards the end of the game. Oh yeah...and then there's this ever trusty flashlight, good to hit slow moving zombies on the head but extremely useful to light up that stupid dark corridors.

I could've swore my eyes began to swell up with heat after playing a couple of hours. It's got everything to do with the totally dark environment. I'd squint my eyes whenever i wanna get a better look with my torchlight on. But even the torch don't light up the centre of the screen, it's a little to the right. Like i expected, doom3 didn't treat us with anything new gameplaywise. It gets a little repetitive down the line but the graphic's what keeps me playing on. I enjoyed my brisk walk down to hell. It's kinda scary with cut up torsos and the nervous crying sound around. The big boss there totally kicks ass. I like how you can interact with the panels in the game with your mouse; the crosshair turns into a cursor to navigate...cool! The cutscenes are well done. This one bad dude, Dr. Betruger...he kinda looks like Anthony Hopkins (hannibal) to me. Sounds like him as well. If doom were to be made into a movie, get him! Great voice acting...chilling sounds...cheap scares abound and you could finish the game 2 days tops knowing it was in development for 4 years? What's not to like!

My rating: 9/10 (Wow! Yikes!)

THE SUFFERING review

I gotta tell you, something is seriously wrong with this game. Everything about this game is wrong. Not since Resident evil or the Silent hill series does a game truly exudes an extreme aura of evil. Yep, a survival horror of sorts. It's been a while since this genre ever made a move and i believe this title somehow nailed it.

You are Torque, a convict sent off to prison. Where? the Island State Penitentiary, Carnate Island. Why? Found guilty for killing his wife and two sons. You'd expect him to deserve what he did right? But then he blanked out during the massacre and ended up now not sure if he ever did it. The islands began to shook, earthquake. Suddenly the lights went out. Screeching noise ensues. Inmates and prison guards ended up dead either stabbed in the chest or poked thru the head. This is one gory game!

As you got thru quite a bit, equipped yourself with a shiv which is a makeshift blade, a guard broke thru a door and told you to lay down. But then two voices loomed, one telling me to waste that guard and another to join up with him. I could kill him straight away if i was bad enough but instead figured my options. This sort of choice happened seldomly throughout the game; which determines your overall rating thus whether you get a good or a bad ending. cool! That evil voice is quite tempting though. Blast that guy's head with a shotgun! mmm...tempting...

The monsters that pop up are all bad stuff. They're really derived from the types of execution ever held on the island. A certain weapon works best against them. The small boss like hermes, doctor Killjoy and the green gas dude really brings out the best in the game as they pushes the storyline forward. Doctor killjoy will brief you abit on why you can transform yourself into a monster. Every once in a while you're surely to bump into them, where a cutscene will takeover. Satisfying.

The puzzle in the game are so straight forward. What i mean is, they're really logical and fit in with real life. You've got to open your eyes and search around for clues. The puzzle is a plus in the game and never a burden. One example, you got fires that needs dousing right? So you turn on the sprinkler then move that crate over there and cover the drain so the place will flood a bit and eventually clear the fire. See what i mean?

The sound in the game is eerie. The ambience is spot on and sure to give you the shivers. I turned my head back many times bcoz having a 5.1 audio setup, the sound can really freak you out! The game is nice to play, featuring a third person and also first. Though the first person leaves alot to be desired because the weapon model are so not there but if you want accuracy when shooting and for atmosphere, it's ok. The indoor and outdoor environment are well done and varies as you'll be going places. You'll have a map to guide you and it imitates abit from silent hill.

The ending? Well it's all up to you really. I've got a good ending being a goodie two shoes and all. But really it's just agame. Let your heart out and just play! This game is so intense and spooky at the same time. Now my next fix would be Silent Hill 4 the Room. The Room? Muahahaha!!! dats an evil laugh ok? not the happy2 one ok? ok.

My rating: 8/10 (Downrite brutal!)

Brace yourself for...DOOM3!!!

Alrite! Finally the game we've all been waiting for. It's gonna be out officially in the US on 3rd of August and i just can't believe it! The biggie aside from Half Life2, Stalker and F.E.A.R. All this super-duper games have one thing in common: they're the ones that are gonna shook your PC with their next gen graphics and stuff, if you've the right hardware to allow it. Seriously, i'm pretty nervous here how Doom3 will play out on my PC. Scared shitless. These games have been in development for so long. Half Life2 will be around in September. That's pretty cool. To me, this is just awesome. 2 weeks from now, Hooo!!!! Doom3!!! Muahahaha!!!

Ain't she gorgeous?

I've fallen in love the first time i laid my eyes on this baby. This is exactly the casing i was searching for to house my ultimate gaming PC; it's got a cool front design, transparent side covers (although not that big but still could see inside what?) and a genius of an idea to use plastics slide em' instead of screws. Chenbro Gaming Bomb! What a bomb(shell)! It's kinda cool to see the insides of your PC thru the transparent sides, and i've fitted a fan that flashes bright colors at the back and a normal fan at the front. Way cool! Building the PC from zero was totally fun! All thanks to my buddy Efendi who showed me around. I enjoyed it immensely! Give it a try!

This is what the Chenbro Gaming Bomb looks like...

Woweee!!!

Ya'll wanna know something? I have a spanking brand new PC (ooo yeah!) and to tell u the truth, i'm crying to pieces! (I'm not really...well i should!) Really...to me this is what all gamers should have and nothing less. But it really depends on everybody. You see...this new PC costs me....well...my bank account! Man... i gotta work and start saving again! Man....

I decided to spend quite considerably because i want it to last for a long time (ok...also to be able to play Doom3 when it comes out). With computers, nothing don't last so long; not unlike game consoles where their life time is roughly about 4 to 5 years. I did my homework...y'know...did some researching and all. But in the end i ended up with something...very...different but satisfying none the less.

I kinda toy around on getting a 64 bit PC (now most are 32s) in the form of AMD Athlon 64. The thing is, you'd need an OS that will support the 64 bit thingie to get the most out of it...There's Windows XP 64 bit edition (there's a beta version) which is not out yet. There's Linux 64 bit OS but i'm really not familiar with it. I really wanna try out new technologies (64 bit) but i guess it's still early in development (for home PCs)...and there's not big a support still. 64 bit computers at the moment are used to do big stuff like animation and the sort. So i guess i'll back off till there's more people who can clarify their powerfulness in the gaming arena.

I build my PC from the ground up. I bought the desired components and went away. This was my first time putting together my very own PC and i have my bud, Efendi to thank. He's been great and taught me much. I've always wanted to do this for a long time but was put off for a couple of reasons and one of them is, afraid of breaking anything. Silly huh? It could happen i tell you but the most important thing is...you gotta be sober while working at it and just stay awake. What i mean is to know what ur doing. I thought it was hard at first but after finishing assembling it, i gotta tell u...it was quite a piece of cake and such a joy! I liked putting in the RAM (I was kinda scared before...even got into a nasty fight with my bud- weird huh?), the graphics card in the slot with a satisfying CLICK! Gotta love that!

So here's my PC spec...(nothing to brag about by the way, ehem)

Processor : Pentium 4, 3.0 gig (1mb cache) Hyper Threading
Motherboard : Intel D865PERL ,Usb 2.0, SATA, Dual DDR
HDD : SATA Seagate Barracuda 80 gig
ODD : Samsung Combo DVD-RW
RAM : 1 gig DDR Kingston
Audio : Creative Sound Blaster AudigySE
Casing : Chenbro Gaming Bomb (I've fallen in love with it!)
and the best thing for last...
Graphics Card : Asus ATI Radeon 9800XT! 256mb!!!

Yowza!

PAINKILLER review

Woohoo! I haven't had this much fun since playing Serious Sam! That game was great and all simply because it was all nonsense and hordes of enemies on your butt, there was never a boring time. Painkiller is that kind of game also but the people from Dreamcatcher sure does it in style!

You start off as this guy, along with his girlfriend and they got involved in a car accident. The girl gets to enter heaven but somehow our hero here is denied of heaven; instead has to earn it by killing Lucifer's top 4 commanders. Some story this is! I guess you need some kind of story to get things going, and this is just fine.

The weapon in Painkiller is awesome. You get the Painkiller which is a melee weapon but also a laser thingy. The stake gun is a one hit-one kill weapon which is good but it's slow to reload. I kinda like how the stake shoots and stick the badguy to the wall and left him dangling there. Oh yeah, this game has a cool physics engine and you'll get to see arms and bodies flailing around. It's simply sweet. Even the objects have the same property and it is a great game mechanics.

The place your going is in between Heaven and Hell, but the environment strangely seems like on earth, except more eerily. You'll never get bored of going through the levels as all the levels are unique. You'll be going to military base, the harbour, train station and also an opera house! Weird huh? You'll get a dozen or so different enemies and all are very distinct.

The big bosses in the game are something. And when i mean big, they're BIG!!! Some 3-4 storeys tall. Whoa! But it was fun beating them if you know how to. The end level, which is the Hell...is pretty cool. You expect to run into lots of fiery fires right? Not! It's cool how they depict wars of different eras as the setting. The last level was pretty big y'all. Simply stunning!

The game graphics are well done and looks sharp. You'll have tons of enemies onto you and the screen still holds up. Special mention also to the Audio. I'ts pretty downright scary and gets your heart beating real fast.

My rating: 8/10 (Outrageously scaree!!!)

Silent Hill 4 : The Room

This is the theme song from the upcoming Silent Hill game. This game is like Resident Evil but more gruesome and frightening...huhahuha!!!

You lie silently before me
Your tears they mean nothing to me
The wind, howling of the wind
The love you never gave, I give to you
Really don't deserve it
But now there's nothing you can do
So sleep in your only memory
Of me, my dearest mother
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes, goodbye
It was always you that I despise
I don't feel it not for you to cry, oh well
Here's a lullaby to close your eyes
Goodbye...
Goodbye...
Goodbye...
Goodbye...

Babai!

FAR CRY review

Imagine yourself on a tropical island, where the sun is bright, the sea is crystal clear blue, the sands are pure white and the lush vegetation are...as green as they can be. Now give yourself an M16, toss in a few grenades, a couple of mercenaries to play around with and you've got yourself the dream vacation! This is what Far Cry is all about.

Crytek showed a tech demo called X-Isle and it was meant to showcase the power of Geforce3 card. The demo shows you around a dense jungle and dinosaurs. This is the starting point for Far Cry. From a tech demo to a full FPS game. I heard about the game earlier before; the view distance was so long and if you see an island, chances are you can get to it. Pretty cool. Then there's the bad guys reinforcements by helicopters to your location. Now that's scary.

Far Cry does have those and a lot more. The graphics oh so beautiful, coupled with an awesome physics engine to give you those ragdoll physics. The island looks and feels real; i could just turn on the game, go to a quiet spot on the beach and just relax. Cool. And the foliages gives you cover and it's not just for show. The island settings is just what FPS needs, truly a breath of fresh air. There are indoors environments and it just look amazing as well; kinda have that Doom3 look here.

The AI in the game is above average. The mercenaries coordinate their attack military-style if they ever spot you. And if you gun their leader, the rest will scatter around for you to finish them off. They're also good at taking cover, behind rocks and trees. And the best thing about that ragdoll physics is that it is sweet here. This is one game you'll not see the bad guy's body half disappering into the wall like they usually do in other games. The AI's simply superb and a fun to play with.

This game has a very high replay value. Why? You can try so many different ways to approach your objectives. Whether you go in guns blazing or you could take the back route and pick off the bad guys unnoticed (if you've got a silencer). Perhaps that boat will ferry you around the island quicker or maybe take the buggy for a quick spin. But don't ever swim your way to a bad guy because you can't shoot in the water (that's my tip). You can try many kinds of tactics and if that doesn't work, you could try other else. Simply cool!

The story's pretty standard for a FPS. Nothing much here. You'll play through the game fine except if you try the harder difficulties. My advice: just play the game on the normal settings, the bad guys gives you more challenge than you need anyways. Towards the game's end, you'd feel hard-pressured not to swear at the near-impossible chance for survival. It's pretty tough and stupid. This is one game you'll need lots of patience or you could look up some cheats so that you can beat the game and get to see the most pathetic ending, heh! Otherwise the game's a blast to play. Give it a go!

My rating: 9/10 (One of the best looking FPS out there)

Thief: Deadly Shadows preview

This is one of the game i'm waiting so far. It'll be out officially 26th May. This is the 3rd installment in the Thief series. You play the role of Garrett, a master thief; you plunder the riches and take it for yourself. Not exactly Robin Hood is he? He's what you call the anti-hero. I played the first and the second but at that time i wasn't seriously hooked to it; so i never did finish both. But that's all gonna change with this one. I can't wait to play it! Shadows and lightings are gonna play a major role this time around. Even sneaking up behind someone is hard if the bad guy ever saw your shadow past him. That's hard! This game is made by the same people who did Deus Ex Invisible War and will use the updated graphics engine from it. So you see, lightings here are pretty well done and more advanced than in Deus Ex.

The 3rd person view implemented might just make the game a bit different from the series. The 1st person is still there; you possibly couldn't get a good aim when arrow'ing' in a 3rd person manner. In 3rd person you'll see Garrett move about, doing his stuff and the animations will be astonishing. You just got to see it. Here's the new trailer, check it out :

SPLINTER CELL PANDORA TOMORROW review

The first game rocks! You are an agent, kinda like James Bond but without the girls. You'll mostly hide in the shadows, waiting for that moment to pounce on the bad guy. While the stealthy-hide-in-the-shadows won't appeal to you much, the gameplay and the atmosphere is right in there. This time around, you'll go undercover to take down an indonesian badass Suhadi Sadono, who was seen blasting the American embassy at the beginning of the game.

The graphics has gone up a notch and you'll sure need a helluva system to play it on. The game's pretty but since most of the time you're sneaking in the dark, well... Almost everything in the game cast shadows. There's this fishing net with the zigzaggy lines, even that casts shadow realistically. The shadows rendering's that's whats heavy. Switching to night vision (which you'll be doing most of the time) tones down the heavy stuff and looks great. I really like the thermal vision (borrowed the tech from Predator) which looks downrite cool. You control Sam Fisher in 3rd person view. The neat thing is when you draw your silencers, the view sort of got focused; as if a cam view from his right shoulders. Neat.

Sam's still got that cool moves like before and some more. There's a different kind of split-jump which you can execute in a tight space. From the old split jump position, you can lean left or right and from there you can get hold of a ledge high above you. An improvement, you can now open the door on the go while carrying a body. There's this new SWAT turn, which looks cool and gimicky. That move will make Sam completely invincible. The gadget you'll be carrying is the same as before, like the sticky shocker, distraction cam, the lot. This time you'll be given the whole thing at the start of any mission, neat!

The story is more believable this time around. You're up against a real threat and there's intense moments once in while. I liked the train mission, cool stuff. What were you thinkin' Sam, hanging on the side of a moving train? And the story seems to tie with the multiplayer aspect of the game. I haven't give it a try, but by the looks of it, i'll bet it's fun! It's like Counterstrike played stealthy like and alot more coop. My only thing about this game is how linear it is. There's really one route to move on but the execution is up to you. It does fit with this kind of game though. The multiplayer part is the king! The singleplayer...well...it will only hook you for so long.

Oh yeah, Michael Ironside (of Starship Troopers) does the voice for Sam Fisher. It sounds great with him, and the gruffiness of his voice can even match Solid Snake's. The stealth thing may make Splinter Cell a bit like Metal Gear Solid, but it is more realistic what with no radar and all.

My rating : 6/10 (the game is sooo linear!)

About my Games Reviews

The thing i like about writing down reviews for a game, it shows i have played the game, experience it all and i wanna share that xp with you guys out there. I will in detail mention stuff bout the game, most of it will be good points and we can't deny the bad ones! I'll try to keep the reviews short; it's not like i'm competing with other reviews out there isn't it? I try to bend the reviews more to my style of writing. More stuff of what i like about the game, i will write it down. The Syberia 2 review seems a tad long. But one thing, please, pretty please let me know if you liked my reviews and stuff by scribbling something down on the doodle board to your right. Can't wait to hear from you guys! See ya!

Next Up: Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow and Far Cry reviews!

The King of Racing games now!

Got meself a PC steering wheel! I'm such a lil kid! Well...it's a MOMO force feedback by Logitech. I couldn't get the one that i wanted, a Saitek R440 which was a winner. But the MOMO wasn't a lightweight, no...the overall design felt professional-ish with the rubbery feel to the wheel and all. It felt like the real thing. And setup was dead easy and spot on.

The first racing games i tried it on was Colin Mcrae Rally 04. Rally games proves to be a too much exercise for this baby. You have to play rough and steer the wheels a lot to just to get your car on the track. A few calibration here and there and it already felt like a winner. Fantastic stuff!

Next I tried F1 2001 that i borrowed from my friend, Zaim. I know it's a lil bit outdated but if it's works, it's not broken, that's what they say. You supposedly have to switch off the steering assistance in the game so that you'd have total control over the steering. You'd have to spend some time to get used to the driving because the car tends to spin a lot and lose control easily.

Next up is Need for Speed Underground. Man...the game responded very well to the wheel and the vibrations such as going on a bumpy road or smashing into other cars and sidebends are all there. The experience was brill! Dodging from cars to cars could never be this easy!

I can't wait for the ultimate racing simulator, TOCA Race Driver 2 to arrive on the PC! That racing game has a lot of racing modes such as street racing, DTM, V8, rally, ice rally, trucks!, classic cars and F1s. Simply a Gran Turismo for the PC! Richard Burns Rally could prove to be a good rally game other than the Colin Mcrae's series. And then there's Juiced, a completely street racing game like Underground. It's all good stuff, can't wait!

The day I didn't win the Nokia N-gage

Man...it was cool! Wish you guys were there to support me...I was in my area of expertise and i'm pretty glad i ended where i was- 2nd place! The recent PC fair was held on the 16th till 18th. I went there everyday, the first day was to scout around, maybe if i could find the steering wheel that i wanted. Hmph! There's really not much of a choice, in fact it was pathetic. And you call this a PC fair, bah! And the ones i could find was more pricey than that at Low Yatt's. Hopeless!

The next day I went with my frenz, Efendy and Nik. The Gamers.com.my booth really had my attention. The games on display were Battlefield Vietnam and Fung Wan Online. Those two played great on their power-packed PCs. It looked and played great. Wish i had one of those systems. Oh yeah...i entered the Nokia N-gage Pandemonium competition. The rule's simple really. You have to race from start to finish, so no collecting rings or killing baddies or anything. Focus on moving along. A platform game. Dead simple. And the first place prize? The mighty fine Nokia N-gage of coz. That day i went up against a chinese guy and kicked his sorry butt out of the game! Ha!

The final day of PC fair was the finals. I had beaten 2 more contestants before progressing to the finals! It felt great! The final round was hard; there were 3 rounds. Whoever gets the 2 round wins. The first round this chinese guy wins. Alright no matter. The next one, i win bebeh! But this last round was a complete dunno to me. I don't think it was a race at all. It was like you have to kill the bad boss in the middle of the screen. I just kept on running, even passed the chinese guy. I thought i was on the winning streak, but otherwise. I guess you were suppose to find a way, a trick, into defeating the bad boss and he got to it first. That was a total complete bad news. THe guys in charge of the competition didnt even tell me what i was going to expect. So... there you have it, 2nd place. Man...I think the chinese guy must've played the game before, even a pro at it, bcoz he seems to know where to go. And he seems to be in terms with the guys handling the tournament. I bet he must've been someone's family. Drat! 2nd place doesn't get me an N-gage. I was really looking to get a new handphone, coz my sis had a new one. I got meself an optical mouse and a new Malaysian Gaming magazine, it's first issue. Only RM5.50! Great.

At least i tried my best, i believe it to be my best. Platform games are a synch to me really. I have played Sonic the Hedgehog and tons of other platform games and I excel at it. My family knows i'm deep into this gaming thing. My dad even encouraged me to win. He reminded me who else played Pacman at the age of 4 other than me. It was really an inspiration for me. And the night before the finals i saw the Last Samurai with me dad. A great movie, really an epic. That was my other source for inspiration, the movie. Honor. Ha! Great stuff.

The N-gage would've been in my hands now...Todays title would've been different. Ha, forget it man...But i did try my best though. At least i got my picture taken. Check out the coming issue of Shoppers Computimes. I think it will be published there. Great fun. The intensity and all. Just what i need every now and again!

SYBERIA 2 review(part 2)

Just because this sequel is here to tie up loose ends doesn’t mean that the puzzle element is taken lightly, oh no…far from it. You interact to learn about stuffs and also pickup objects. It’s best to explore the area to see the overall picture. The game’s like a jigsaw puzzle, really. A certain something only functions with a certain object; it all seems perfectly logical and not that far-fetched. Rest assured that the puzzles are not that hard but a certain puzzle do require some tinkering about. The only thing I hate about this game is when you have to backtrack, to find more clues and such. Sometimes it’s just for a simple tiny little thing. It’s very tiring to see Kate paddling back and forth like someone overly motivated. That’s just it really…the backtracking's the only bad point of this game.

The famous Inon Zur composed the music in the game…His previous work such as Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal would mean that you're in for a real treat. The music is soothing and feels epic, but not that epic-ish. Not as epic as in the first game. I wanted to weep at some point in the game, what with the combination of the characters expression, epic music, plot’s climax and everything, but I didn’t go all out, I don’t know why. Like I said…the music is not that epic enuff. The menu music…now that’s epic! And speaking of epic, what makes the first Syberia game so interesting is Kate’s life itself. There’s quite a lot of story to her and her character’s development is there. Syberia 2 doesn’t have that much to tell, it seems shallow this time around.

Syberia 2 has a decent ending but it’s the overall package and finally getting to see Kate and Hans at their journey’s end, proves the experience was well worth it. It’s like um, reading the Lord of the Rings books and then seeing the movies. There’s not that many a puzzle/adventure games out there but it’s safe to say that Syberia1 and 2 are the best of its kind. Tadaa…

My rating: 8/10 (It's that good, really!)

SYBERIA 2 review (part 1)

I suggest you play the original Syberia before embarking on this sequel/finale of an adventure. The game’s really a continuation of the story where it was left off. Kinda like the Matrix trilogy, but this game isn’t just a sequel. One thing, the game’s design and puzzle element are there and it’ all fresh!

Syberia 2 tells a story about Kate Walker, a New York lawyer being sent somewhere in the Alps to negotiate a takeover of a factory that makes luxury toys and automatons. Everything seems fine when you later found out that there is an heir and it’s up to you to reach him and close the deal. So the journey to find this mysterious person known as Hans Voralberg began. In this sequel, Kate and Hans, along with Oscar the automaton, travel eastward to get to their dream place…Syberia! And finally get to see some friggin’ living mammoth which is what the game is all about.

The first thing I like about this game is the graphics. It boasts a beautiful pre-rendered background. It’s art is extremely detail which really brings the game world to your attention. It’s simply breathtaking, I tell you. You’d think that a puzzle/adventure game to be simple and plain but it’s really otherwise. In fact, in this kind of genre, game makers could focus more on art direction to make the experience more memorable. You control Kate in a third person manner. Kate’s animation is well done, from walking to running and climbing ladders, it’s pleasing to see her butt up and running! She casts a very realistic shadow also when she moves about. NPCs (non-player character) are varied from Oscar to the cuddly Youki, they all have adequate movement but not that much. The cutscenes are special and only comes out during a climactic event. You’d know that this game doesn’t need that high a requirement to play it because it’s just Kate doing her thing onscreen with the background’s static. Adventure/puzzle game are famous for that, oh, except for the new Myst game, Uru. Now that’s…

Me and my buddy Pacman

I've been playing games all my life. It started way back when I was a wee lil kid and uh, it was my dad who introduced me to video games. The system was the Atari XL - 8 bit console at it's finest! I remember all sorts of games, there was Pacman, an all time fave, Boulder Dash(i forgot how that played out but must be terrific) and Frogger(remember trying to get a frog to cross a road and jumping logs?) to name a few. U could say that was my primary education in gaming! Fun stuff especially being a kid, without all the care in the world. And then later on in life i got meself a Micro Genius(?) with the cartridge games, 4 in 1 cartridge to the insane 100 in 1 (most of the games were derivatives of one another). Yeah, i remember playing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, agreat action game that one! And numerous others.

Sega Master Systems 2 that i owned was a step up in graphics. I got to play the classic Prince of Persia on it, woohoo! Glad i've played it b4 taking on the latest version by Ubisoft, which was a fine game- wait for that review. Most people would have the Playstation, including me with tons of games to boot. The Dreamcast would be the last console todate i bought from afriend. The reason i picked it up b'coz it's got a gemful of games like Shenmue, Grandia2...Crazy Taxi1 and 2!!! Nowadays, i'm a PC gamer. Always trying to find ways to 'up' the game experience like investing in a powerful graphic card, sound card, and speaker (Edifier 5.1-great stuff, proud of it, ha!). The latest news: i'm gonna get meself a forcefeedback wheel to play all the gorgeous upcoming racing games, CANT WAIT!!! Yeah!!!

A Wrinkle in Time

Wassup ya'll? How wuz ur holiday? Mine was alright, i dont go out much but i guess thats fine. Havent been up to things much, redecorated my room a lil bit, nothin' much. Put up a "Danger Mines!" warning on my door, that should keep any unwanting visitors out of the way. I cleaned a lot of dusts here and there. I threw away alot of old stuff and things that really takes too much space...like, Wham! ur dead. Got a lot junks and old comics, i'm thinking of selling them one copy for one ringgit and the story books for 5? Pretty reasonable, i would think. All talk but no action...looks like i'm gonna be keepin' them for quite some time.

Ah...I've been pretty much playing games nowadays. This year, believe me, alot of really great, cool games are gonna come out. Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 being a fave at the moment. Not to mention Thief: Deadly Shadow, Hitman Contracts and a slew of racing games like Colin Mcrae Rally 04, TOCA Race Driver2 and Juiced...man, cant wait to try them out, especially when trying them out with a force feedback wheel. Way cool! I dont know how it's gonna be like but i bet that u could feel the shakes when on rough surfaces and, uh, when u *accidentally* bump your car at a sidebend. Wayhey! Cant Wait! But before that, right now i'm playing Syberia 2, a puzzle adventure game. I'd like to tell u bout it but u'll have to wait for the review as soon i finish it ok? Whew!
